Representation

Direct representation

The public page says a gift for direct representation financially supports a plaintiff’s lawsuit against the government. Five Stones Legal Defense Fund is not a law firm. A gift does not create an attorney-client relationship.

The page defines “strategic litigation against government” this way. Strategic means repeated litigation across subject areas. Litigation means civil cases about how legal texts are read. Against means suits against government, not on behalf of it, so opposing counsel are generally government attorneys or lawyers paid by government or a government insurance trust. Government means the United States and its agencies, states and their agencies, counties, school districts, municipalities, and townships.

The page says this kind of support is not messaging, investigation, or lobbying, and that a gift designated for direct representation is not used for those three categories.

It says the work is a way for people and businesses to challenge government for violations of law, alongside other cultural and political action. It says a donor can follow the court cases and see whether that approach is working.
